What is the difference between short and long-term capital gains?

Assets held over one year qualify for long-term rates (0%, 15%, or 20%). Under one year is short-term, taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate (up to 37%).

What is the Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)?

An additional 3.8% tax on investment income for individuals earning over $200,000 ($250,000 MFJ). This applies on top of the regular capital gains rate.

Can I offset gains with losses?

Yes. Capital losses offset capital gains dollar-for-dollar. If losses exceed gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 per year from ordinary income. Unused losses carry forward.
