How much waste should I plan for?
10% is standard for simple rectangular decks. For angled or complex designs, use 15-20% to account for more cuts.
What is the standard deck board gap?
Most builders use a 1/8 inch (0.125") gap between boards for drainage and expansion. Composite boards may need slightly larger gaps -- check manufacturer specs.
What size deck boards should I use?
The most common deck board is a 5/4 x 6 (actual width 5.5"). Standard 2x6 boards (actual 5.5") are also popular for wood decks.
