What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet. Roofing materials are sold by the square. Three bundles of standard shingles cover one square.
How does roof pitch affect materials?
Steeper roofs have more surface area than the footprint suggests. A 6/12 pitch roof has about 12% more area than a flat roof of the same footprint.
How much waste should I plan for?
10% is standard for simple gable roofs. Hip roofs, valleys, and complex designs may need 15-20% waste.
